About this test
The Blood Pressure Test measures the pressure of blood against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood around the body. The measurement provides two values, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which are recorded in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). Regular blood pressure monitoring can help identify elevated or low blood pressure and provide useful information for routine health assessments and ongoing medical care. The measurement is performed using an appropriate blood pressure monitor by trained healthcare or laboratory personnel. Your reading should be considered alongside your symptoms, medical history, and other clinical findings where applicable.
Preparation
- No fasting is required. For the most reliable reading, rest quietly for at least 5 minutes before the measurement. Sit comfortably with your back supported and your feet flat on the floor.
What to do / avoid
- Do: Rest quietly before the measurement, remain seated and relaxed, keep your feet flat on the floor, and keep your arm supported at approximately heart level during the measurement.
- Avoid: Avoid strenuous exercise, smoking, and consuming caffeinated beverages shortly before the measurement, as these may temporarily affect your blood pressure reading. Avoid talking or moving during the measurement.
