About this test
PSA is a blood test that measures prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate. It is used as part of the assessment of prostate health, including prostate enlargement, inflammation and prostate cancer.
Preparation
- - Fasting is generally not required.
- - Follow any specific instructions from your healthcare provider.
What to do / avoid
- - Avoid ejaculation for about 24–48 hours before the test, as it may temporarily increase PSA.
- - Tell your doctor if you have recently had a prostate examination or procedure.
- - Inform your healthcare provider about medications such as finasteride or dutasteride, which can lower PSA levels.
